Use a different strategy for each kind of market

A playbook picks one of your own strategies for each of your kinds of market, or stays out. Test the whole playbook in Backtest, then run it on an account.

A playbook says which of your own strategies trades in each kind of market. For example: when gold is trending up, use one strategy. When it's in a range, use another. When it's consolidating, use a third, or stay out. You don't need one. A single strategy can run on its own.

Make a playbook

Open Playbooks and choose Make a playbook. Choose the market. Only markets your strategies trade are offered, and you can have one playbook for each market.

A playbook has one line for each of your kinds of market, plus Any other time. If you haven't said what your kinds of market mean yet, you are asked to first. See Kinds of market.

Choose a strategy for each kind

Open a line, then choose one of your strategies or Stay out. Your strategies are listed in the order you made them. A strategy for a different market can't be chosen, and says why. A line uses the version of the strategy you chose, and keeps it until you choose again.

Under each strategy is how that version did in this kind of market in its latest saved backtest, after fees, with its number of trades. It is shown only when that test read the market with your kinds as they are now. Otherwise it says Not tested in this kind yet, with Test it.

Under More details you can type a risk for each trade in that kind of market. Leave it empty to use the account's risk. A trade never risks more than the account's risk.

Test the whole playbook

Choose Test the whole playbook. Type the account's risk for each trade, choose fees and choose a chart, then Test it. Every strategy in the playbook runs together, in your browser, one trade at a time, each only in its own kinds of market. It uses the same rules the Bot uses when it runs the playbook on one account.

  • Practice chart. Made-up prices, so you can see how it works. It is free, and its results aren't real.
  • My chart file. A file of the playbook's market, exported from your charting platform. It stays on this device and is never sent. Testing on it needs the Backtest plan. Its candles must be the size your strategies read or smaller, and you confirm the time zone of its times. See Backtest on your own chart file.

The result shows the whole playbook, each strategy in it, and each kind of market, before and after fees, and which chart it ran on.

The playbook keeps its last result. Change a line or your kinds of market and the old result is no longer shown as current.

Run it on an account

Under Run it on an account, choose the account. You see what would change before anything does, and nothing changes until you confirm. The account keeps its own risk and safety settings. The playbook counts as one strategy on your plan. It can't run on the demo account yet, because the demo runs one strategy at a time.

Removing a playbook doesn't stop an account running it. That account keeps it until you choose something else for it.

Right now

On an account running the playbook, Right now says which kind of market it is in and what that means, for example "gold is trending up, so My fast cross can trade." Your own computer works this out from its own candles and sends only those words to you. No prices are sent. Until the computer has said anything, the line says it is waiting to hear from it.
